I went from being so excited that the next book in this series was out (I thoroughly enjoyed Barely a Lady) to being very nervous when I saw so many negative reviews. Plus, I read some of the spoilers (I just can't help myself) and knew about "the scene." I don't typically approve of what happens in "the scene" either, but I have to say I disagree with those negative reviews. I concur with those that say it was awful; it was and my heart bled/ached for Grace (and I wanted to do some serious bodily harm to Diccan). However, it didn't stop me from loving this book, which for me is due to Eileen Dreyer being an excellent writer. I don't tend to be a black & white person - I do believe there can be gray areas in life and what Diccan did fell into a gray area (sorry, no tomatoes please!). I really felt Diccan had his reasons for doing what he did and they were sufficiently explained. I'm not saying I agreed with them, but they were there. I did feel his torment when his viewpoints were given (which thank goodness we were given his POV in this book otherwise, I would have hated him). Diccan was torn from what started out as his obligation to Grace, but which quickly turned to respect, admiration and finally love. When Grace falls ill, his reaction was priceless in my opinion. It also features a wallflower heroine who has been made to expect nothing from life but spinsterhood. She has no hope for anything more and the one time she does hope, she's severely letdown.
Anyways, hopefully I haven't given away too much. If you are considering reading this book please be forewarned this is not a feel good romance. It's angsty, edgy and full of torment. If you want fluff, go find another book.
I absolutely loved it! I love it when characters like the heroine get their HEA - it just seems so much more deserved. Can not wait for Kate's story next!!

Travel back to a period when honor was a word that was not just said. Eileen Dreyer takes you back into the secret world of Drake's Rakes where playboy Diccan Hillard finds himself in a compromising position and faced with the choice of doing the honorable thing or running away potentially ruining his good name. But his issues have nothing on the strong and feisty Grace Fairchild, daughter of a General and the object of fond affection for "Grace's Grenadiers" who found herself in the same compromising position. Will they learn to work together and find love along the way or kill each other trying to make it work? You must read the book to find out. Elegant language, beautifully described scenery, and love scenes which will singe your eyebrows. A great read that will keep you up well into the night to find out what happens next.
I loved the book. Yes, Grace put up with some stuff, but when one considers her background and how little she values herself to begin with, I can understand it. As for Diccan, he never claimed to love her at the beginning. He grew to love her, and when he did, he became the gentleman we all hoped he would be. I usually don't read books where the hero fools around on the heroine, but in this case it not only fit the story but was an integral part of it. Both hero and heroine had lessons to learn about each other and themselves. The adultery in this book, I felt served a purpose, and I don't think it detracted from the love story.
I could not put this book down. Emotional conflicts throughout the story Grace was my heroine she was a strong woman against mean, cruel people and held her self high. In the end she got her man I wish they would make a move on this book It would be uplifting to all women.
I really am at a loss. I do not know exactly how to describe the emotions this novel evoked. And emotions is the correct word because that is what this novel is, an emotional ride. My heart hurt, my eyes cried, and my mind raged.
Four stars because the novel is well written, well developed, and mostly well researched. The settings are very well described (so well that at the end it got a bit tiresome). The emotions of guilt, on Diccan's side, and betrayal, abandonment, helplessness, and everything else in between, on Grace's side, are so well drawn out that the reader actually suffers them. But the author's horrible treatment of the female protagonist, Grace, and Grace's passivity bring the 3 stars into play.
After being set up and found together in a compromising situation, Grace and Diccan have to wed, to save his reputation and credibility more than hers. He is a diplomat, uncovering a plot to remove England's mad king, replacing him with Charlotte who would be putty in the hands of those behind the scheme (the Lions). So, in the name of England, shortly after his marriage, Diccan is screwing his long time mistress, who has followed him to England, so he can get information from her. Grace only knows that he is sleeping with his mistress, does not know the reasons behind it. But is made to watch her husband screw the brains out of his lover by the Lions (unaware that they are the Lions) so that she could be convinced he is being investigated for treason and help them (the Lions) bring him down. ANYWAY ...
I did not really like this part. I did not like the fact that Grace did nothing, nothing! She was nicknamed the little Colonel, well that is as inept a comparison as can be made. A Colonel should LEAD not FOLLOW, bark orders not be subservient. And that is what Grace is - subservient. It is this that makes the 3 stars stand out even more in my mind. Grow some backbone woman.
I do not know if in 1813, right after the turn of the century, women were exposed to such horrible treatment, horrible emotional neglect, horrible outright discard; I do not know if it was acceptable; I do not know if women thought it their due; I do know that if all that is true, I am glad I live in 2011.
This was a wonderful story. The author was very brave to write about infidelity. But they over came it and were happy in the end. I think this was the most heart wrenching entertainment I've read to date and I thought it was great! It was not typical and that's also what I loved about it. Bravo! Well done!
